Richard Manuel Fierro was born and raised in San Diego, California, where he developed the values of service, integrity, and leadership. Growing up in a military family, he was inspired by his father and brother, both United States Army veterans, to continue their legacy of service.

Richard earned a four-year ROTC scholarship to San Diego State University and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant at age 22. The following day, he departed for Fort Lewis, Washington, beginning a military career spanning fourteen years.

From 1999 to 2013, Richard served as a Field Artillery Officer (13A), holding leadership assignments at Fort Lewis, Fort Carson, Colorado, and in Germany. His service included three combat deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

Leading Soldiers through dangerous combat environments, Richard faced decisions carrying life-altering consequences. Among his unforgettable experiences was surviving an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on his convoy before leading a raid on a nearby village. Yet his greatest challenges came from decisions affecting the lives of his Soldiers, particularly those involving injury or loss. Through these hardships, he developed an enduring appreciation for the brotherhood, courage, and sacrifices of those he commanded.

For his distinguished service, Richard earned two Bronze Star Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, the Iraq Campaign Medal with Three Campaign Stars, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Two Campaign Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, and numerous unit awards and service ribbons.

Following his military retirement in 2013, Richard continued serving as a Defense Contractor before becoming a Program Manager supporting United States Space Command. His military experiences reinforced the importance of integrity, accountability, leadership, and commitment to something greater than oneself.

Throughout his journey, Richard’s greatest source of strength has been his family. His wife, Jessica, stood beside him through the challenges of military life and four combat deployments. Together, they raised their son, Ricardo “Ricky,” and daughter, Kassandra “Kassy.” Richard credits their unwavering love and sacrifices with sustaining him throughout his career while extending support to the Soldiers under his command.

Today, Richard Fierro’s legacy extends beyond his military accomplishments. It lives through the Soldiers he led, the bonds forged in combat, his continued service to the nation, and his devotion to family. His story reflects the courage required to lead during war, the responsibility of command, and the enduring strength of those who serve. Richard’s life stands as a testament to duty, honor, integrity, and selfless service—values passed down through generations of his family.
