Biography
Sergeant Louie Michael Martinez was born in March of 1947 in San Francisco, California, the first child in a close-knit family surrounded by parents, uncles, and aunts. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1965 and, in 1966, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, completing recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.
Later that year, Sergeant Martinez deployed to the Republic of Vietnam, serving as a rifleman with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, known as “Suicide Charley.” His unit saw heavy combat throughout 1966 during Operations Utah, Indiana, Franklin, and Rio Blanco. With just four days remaining in his tour, on December 4, 1966, he was wounded in action in Quang Nam Province and evacuated to the U.S. Military Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan.
For his courage and sacrifice, Sergeant Martinez was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
After returning home, he married his wife Sylvia in 1969, beginning a partnership that has endured for more than fifty-six years. He built a life of continued service, working at NASSCO Shipyard, serving as a firefighter with the National City Fire Department, and later completing a twenty-five-year career with U.S. Customs before retiring in 2007. He also served as Post Commander of Don Diego VFW Post 7420, where he mentored veterans and advocated for their needs.
Today, Sergeant Martinez and his wife Sylvia are proud parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, three children, six grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters. His life reflects enduring sacrifice, resilience, leadership, and devotion to family and country.
