Biography

Sergeant Juan Manuel Crespin was born on December 22, 1948, in Tijuana, Mexico, and raised in La Coahuila. At the age of twelve, he came to the United States with his mother and brothers and later became a naturalized citizen. Though he has never forgotten his roots, Sergeant Crespin is deeply proud to have served the nation that gave his family opportunity, freedom, and a future.

At just eighteen years old, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served three combat tours during the Vietnam War. Assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, he fought in some of the war’s fiercest engagements, including the Battle of Huế during the Tet Offensive, Operation Mameluke Thrust, and Liberty Bridge Security Operations. Promoted to Sergeant during his second tour, he later served with Marine Aircraft Group 36 at Phu Bai, where he led Quarter Mile Area Security and flew combat missions as a Huey door gunner. During his third tour, he served as a squad leader with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, protecting Marines in the Da Nang area.

For his courage and leadership, Sergeant Crespin earned numerous awards, including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with “V” Device, the Combat Action Ribbon, and multiple unit citations. After returning home, he continued his service as a Marine reservist and built a distinguished civilian career as a master welder supporting U.S. Navy vessels, aerospace programs, and space exploration. He also served his community as a founding member and spokesman of the Logan Heights Veterans Memorial.

Sergeant Crespin is the proud father of Claudia and Karla, and grandfather to Alex, Aiden, Chloe, and Adison. He and his wife, Hortensia, whom he met at Don Diego VFW Post 7420, recently celebrated twenty years of marriage.
